Authorities raided what is by far the largest illegal marijuana crop in Douglas County history, and possibly one of the largest ever discovered in Silver State, on Monday.

With 80 workers, Cedar Flat Grow was Pine Nuts’ largest employer and rivaled several small businesses in Douglas County.

The numbers associated with the 160 greenhouse growing on 22 acres of Washoe Subdivision land are staggering.

Authorities buried 123,900 pounds or 62 tons of marijuana at the site, hopefully deep enough to discourage anyone from trying to dig it up.

The RC is still seeking clarification on the number of factories, but it could quite easily run into the thousands with a value well in excess of the millions.

They weren’t little plants either. People working on site under harsh conditions that would not be acceptable in a regulated business maintained the factories for months.

Residents began reporting the site last summer even as the last embers of Numbers Fire cooled.

Some might wonder why, when you could see the greenhouses on Google Earth, it took more than a year for authorities to search the site.

We doubt anyone will step forward a bit, but we bet the reason was because law enforcement was trying to find the source of funding in what is clearly a sophisticated criminal enterprise.

Authorities could have walked in last summer and cleaned out the 30 or so greenhouses and rounded up the workers, but the goal of a big raid like this is to find the pivots.

That an organized crime syndicate that could involve many Chinese nationals would be held responsible seems plausible given the reports received from residents.

The reality is that the legalization of marijuana and hemp has covered up criminal enterprises that have made people work for them by giving them a veneer of legitimacy.

Residents who complained and documented last year’s growth thought they were being ignored, but sometimes it takes patience to catch a big fish.

Hopefully law enforcement managed to land a big catch, which makes the time and effort spent on this investigation worth it.
